The Normandy Region

The Normandy region of northern France with its dramatic coastline is steeped in history, including the World War II landing beaches, but it also features lush farmland and lively market towns. Cities of Bayeux, Caen and Rouen are some of the well known names in this region.

The largest military landing in history took place in Normandy June 6, 1944. Museums, Monuments, bunkers and cemeteries are a lasting tribute to the Battle of Normandy, a unique experience and a must see.

A perfect base from which to tour the famous beaches, the little town of Bayeux is built around the magnificent Cathedral of Notre-Dame and is home to the 200-foot long Bayeux Tapestry, a world famous work of art whose cartoon-like scenes portray the epic tale of William the Conqueror's expedition to England in the 11th century.

The surrounding area

Bayeux (8km), medieval town: the tapestry (a masterpiece unique in the world), Notre Dame cathedral, Baron Gérard Museum (porcelain, lace and paintings) and General de Gaulle Memorial.
Isigny sur Mer (33km): Tour the facilities of the Isigny Dairy Cooperative, which produces local cheeses.
Caen (35 km): The Abbaye aux Hommes and the Abbaye aux Dames founded by William the Conquerer, the Fine Arts Museum and the Normandy Museum, the Caen Memorial, etc.
D-Day and the Battle of Normandy: the D-Day Museum in Arromanches, Omaha Beach memorial museum in Saint Laurent sur Mer, American cemetery in Colleville sur mer, etc.

Calvados Area
