The Costa Blanca is now one of the most cosmopolitan areas in Europe with a coastline untouched by blatant tourism. Inland, hillsides covered with terraced vineyards and lush-green citrus orchards - testament to the agricultural traditions of the area - are dotted with pretty towns full of narrow streets leading down to flower-filled squares.
At the centre of the White Coast is cosmopolitan Alicante, with its magnificent palm-fringed waterfront promenade, the Esplanada de Espana, and first-class shops and restaurants. Lying between Alicante and Murcia, on the banks of the River Segura, is the historic town of Orihuela ("townhall"), famous for its market gardens and splendid baroque cathedral. Within 20 kms of Orihuela is a stretch of coastline studded with small bays, and home to three championship courses - Campoamor, Las Ramblas and Villamartin.
Alicante, Spain with its beautiful boulevard and pleasant shopping street, is one of the most well-known towns on the Costa Blanca. The coast of Alicante and the Costa Blanca owes its name to the beaches stretching for several kilometers and attracts many sun worshippers and pleasure seekers.
Alicante is one of the fastest-growing cities in Spain. Its economy is based upon tourism in the beaches from Costa Blanca coast, wine production, services and administration. It exports wine, olive oil, and fruit, and has light industries, including food-processing, leather, textiles, and pottery. Turrones (torrons in Catalan) —a honey and almond nougat—is a food specialty of Alicante.
The Villamartin development began in 1972 and has evolved into a splendid Mediterranean village of 1500 apartments, townhouses and villas with two excellent 18 hole courses at its heart, including the original Club de Golf Villamartin and the new Las Ramblas de Orihuela. There is also a central square with a bank, supermarket, shops, cafes and restaurants.
Villamartin is fast becoming one of the most prestigious golf courses in Spain, with all the amenities you would expect from a development of this standard, yet the properties are very affordable.
Added to which the climate is wonderful, the beaches are uncrowded and there are a number of lively towns within close proximity. No wonder Villamartin is attracting so much interest!
Close to Villamartin are numerous beaches with magnificent views over the sparkling blue Mediterranean and the “white sand” that is typical of the Costa Blanca. The beaches along the coastline close to Villamartin are Playa Flamenca, La Zenia, Cabo Roig, and Campoamor. All of these beaches and all the other major beaches along this part of the Mediterranean coastline are regularly awarded the European Blue Flag which is your guarantee of high standards and facilities for the whole family.
Local Street Markets: There are many, many local street markets. So many in fact that, if you have the stamina(!), you can visit more than one market in the same day. These are some of the markets on at the weekend, contact the owner for more information about markets on the weekdays.
•Torrevieja (morning) - Go out onto the N332 and turn left (north) and carry on into Torrevieja (south).
The market is quite hard to find the first time but it’s towards the North of the town and away from the sea. It is the largest market in the area and is excellent for everything, particularly clothes. It will be packed by late morning.

· Playa Flamenca (morning) - Go through Los Dolses to the AP-7 roundabout and take the new, straight road to Via Park and park somewhere along the new road OR go out onto the N332 and turn left (north). Come off right at the next junction then go UNDER the roadway as if you were going to the Supermercado on the LEFT. Park in the supermercado car park. Follow everyone else into the housing estate. Beat the crowds by getting there around 9:30. Good for clothes and household items.

· 'Zoco' also known as 'Lemon Tree Lane' market, near Quesada / Los Montesinos (morning) - Makes big markets look small! Has one area for shopping and another for refreshments, plus a local bodegas - in a shed!! Heading north from Torrevieja, take the left turning signposted Los Montesinos before you reach Guardamar. About half a mile along, turn left into the lemon groves (it is not signposted, but you'll see plenty of vehicles entering and exiting). Highly recommended.
45 mins drive from Alicante airport (aer lingus) and only
20 mins from Murcia airport(ryanair).
