Oxalá is an old farmhouse which has been rebuilt and extended. Both the main house and the attached Carob Suite have a double bedroom and a twin bedded room. The Master bedroom looks out over the long veranda and has a workspace with wifi. The Carob Suite is shaded by a great carob tree and overlooks the pool. A cot is available for an infant. There is a special shower bathroom for wheelchair use. The very large sitting room is spacious and cozy at the same time. There are two comfortable couches, multiple easy chairs and divans, a table ideal for board games or dining, a desk and and wood fireplace. Like the rest of Oxalá, the room is furnished with genuine antique furniture, lamps and rugs, and due to the design of the windows is cool during the hot summer days. The kitchen is ...

...the heart of the house with a central work table and a serving window onto the long veranda. The swimming pool has a large shallow end which warms wonderfully in the summer months for kids to play in. Near the pool under the carob tree is the barbecue. This is a farming community so you will waken to cockerels crowing, the church bell ringing, dogs and donkeys greeting the new day. There is much, much more to the Algarve than sun and sea. You can discover the remains of Roman towns, admire cool tiled churches and explore narrow winding side streets. Estombar church, Igreja de São Tiago, is a national monument and unusual with twin towers. The town boasts the ruins of one of the oldest castles in Portugal. Nearby are the Caves Abne Immar, an underground lake with stalactites (only by appointment). We are in the Barlavento, meaning west. Lagoa is famous for its wines, Silves for its ancient red sandstone castle and battlements standing proudly against a background of mountains, and Caldas de Monchique for its quaint Roman spa town. Lagos, on the coast, was one of the earliest settlements where Prince Henry the Navigator built his ships for the voyages of discovery. Further west lies the dramatic windswept promontory of Sagres, known for its fort, now an emblematic and cultural place, and for being the departure point of Portuguese navigators, and of Cabo de Sao Vicente, once thought, as it stood on the very edge of the world, to be a meeting place of the gods. Algarve claims more than three hundred days of sunshine per year and has something to offer everyone, tempting golf courses on which international tournaments are played, superb tennis, hill-walking and riding, and every watersport you can think of. As for nightlife, head for nearby Carvoeiro, you name it and Algarve has it!

The Estombar church celebrates every festival with a colourful procession. The interior is magnificent with painted tiles and gold leaf encrusted nave. The award-winning winery, Quinta dos Vales in Estombar, welcomes visitors to its adega for wine-tasting. Just a kilometre away is the Slide & Splash Waterpark for the whole family to enjoy. In the other direction and just as close is the riverside park, Sitio das Fontes, with an open-air auditorium that holds festivals such as the three day Summer Jazz Concerts. Fontes also has a fresh springwater pool and picnic tables. Pestana Golf has three golf courses within a few kilometres of the Quinta de Oxalá, Pestana Golfe Resort and Gramacho Golf only 2 kilometres and Vale de Pinta Golf in Carvoeiro. Ferragudo is an old riverside fishing village with a castle, beaches, sailing, windsurfing and plenty of restaurants just 5 kilometres away,. The Arade Centre on the way to Ferragudo holds performances of ballet, opera and classical music. If it's shopping you enjoy, no better than Aqua, the mall in Portimao (7km) with fashion, beauty, art, decor, shoes, high-tech, toys and a food hall. Every Saturday there is a street market in Silves just 9 kilometres away, selling fruit, veg and poultry. Fifteen minutes drive brings you to Porches Pottery, founded by Irish artist Patrick Swift in 1968 and run to this day by his daughters, Julie and Estelle, well worth a visit.
For other local activities there are some amazing events at the Centro Arade 4 kms, the Arena 7 kms and the autodrome only 15 kms away, aside from drawing and painting classes, yoga groups, guided walks, cycling groups, river cruises.

Fly to Faro with Aer Lingus, BA, EasyJet, Ryan Air, Flybe and many more, car hire is available at the airport. Quinta de Oxalá is in Estombar, 50 kilometres from Faro airport on the A22. Exit Silves/Lagoa and follow signs to Estombar. On seeing the town with its twin steepled church atop the hill on the left then take the third turn into Estombar, signposted Sitio dos Fontes. Keep right, past the school and the football pitch, at the top of the hill a sign Qta de Oxala will take you past the cafe on the right to the entrance down a murram road to the property.

Smoking is not allowed indoors, buckets of sand are placed conveniently on the verandas for stubs! Pets are welcome as long as they can sleep on the veranda and get on with the property's own cat called Petroleo, who is not allowed indoors, or to be fed tidbits on the veranda, loves people and will beg to be stroked. The farmhouse itself is all on one level and suitable for wheelchairs. There are access ramps to various outdoor areas and a shower bathroom for wheelchair users. The housekeeper cleans 3 times a week.

Plenty of parking space. Shaded places to read or snooze. Good wheelchair access. Fruit trees; as and when in season, include almonds, grapes, figs, lemons, oranges, medlars, olives, pomegranates, apricots and pears.
