Ryanair's 'carry own bag' proposal dismissed

On Friday July 10, 2009, Transport Minister, Noel Dempsey dismissed Ryanair proposals to have passengers carry their own luggage to the tarmac. He references a series of security measures for cabin and hold baggage that were in place as part of the entire aviation security regime in the state. He also sees the ramifications of manual check-in to be never-ending with the rules and limitations already in place for transporting luggage. Ryanair chief executive Michael O'Leary insists the budget airline proposals could save €20m, through not paying baggage handlers, that would be passed on to consumers. However, Mr Dempsey does not see this as plausible and says he had not been formally approached on the issue. "While I am aware of recent press articles about suggestions by the airline concerned that it plans to stop passengers checking in any baggage from next year, my department has not received any proposal of this nature to date," he said.
