No Frontiers - Lanzarote

The Spanish island of Lanzarote is the most easterly of the Canary Islands, situated just 79 miles off the coast of Africa. It is the fourth largest island in the Canaries with a mild dry climate making it a year round destination. Lanzarote is volcanic in origin but also has sandy white beaches and offers a variety of activities and nightlife, making it a popular destination among Irish tourists.

In the current economic climate we are all feeling the pinch and self-catering accommodation offers an affordable and often more comfortable way to holiday than staying in hotels. For families, self-catering accommodation offers more space and a chance to do your own cooking. With local supermarkets offering superb value for money this is a sure fire way to save some euro.

Holiday Homes Direct offer a variety of self-catering accommodation in Lanzarote to suit all budgets. A great low budget option is Lomo Verde which sleeps five, is located in a highly sought after area in the Old Town of Puerto Del Carmen. This very spacious town house boasts tremendous views of the sea and has a communal pool with separate kiddies pool. It has an excellent location being just a ten-minute walk from supermarkets and restaurants.

The Beach House in Costa Teguise is a mid-range option, which is set back from the road in a quiet area. The Beach House sleeps six and the popular main beach of Las Cucharas nearby. At the upper end of the scale isVilla Benedicte, just fifteen minutes walk to the beach this magnificent villa which sleeps seven is in a superb upmarket location in Old Carmen. It has sun terraces and shaded areas overlooking the private pool with wonderful views beyond to the sea and across to the Old Town. Villa Benedicte is close to the new coastal walkway down to the harbour and the Old Town.

Lanzarote offers the usual beach-related sun destination activities as well as shops, restaurants and nightlife aswell as a couple more unusual ones. Lanzarote's famous Cactus Garden (Jardín de Cactus), based toward the north of the island in Guatiza, is one of the islands hottest attractions all year round. The work of Cesar Manrique, and island born artist, This truly is a celebration of the plant world's spiniest species, comprising one of the best collections of cacti in the world.

Better still, these have all been displayed to their optimum effect against the beautiful backdrop of an amphitheatre like, giant bowl, hewn from an old quarry, that's laid out in steep terraces, echoing the stone wall patterns of the local fields. Alternatively, try a submarine safari in one of the world's most sophisticated tourist submarines from the exclusive marina of Puerto Calero.
