50 plus Holidays for the mature traveller

For anyone planning to head off in early summer, there are plenty of interesting and unusual items to pick up on,

Here in Ireland, the most offbeat place to go is the Beara peninsula in west Cork, completely unspoiled and right off the commercialised tourist trail. There's just one small town, Castletownbere, as well as islands to visit; Bere Island and Dursey Island, the latter approached by cable car, which is a lot of fun in windy weather.

Beara is also home to lots of artists, so you never know what gems you'll find in the galleries and workshops. One writer who swears by the place is Deirdre Purcell, who has a house on the peninsula. If you' re energetic, you can sample the 196 km Beara Way for walking or there's a cycling route too.
