The OCCITANIE Region
This sunniest (and least industrialised) region of Roussillon offers perhaps the most varied, unspoiled and exciting scenery and acivities of all France - from its limitless sandy beaches, charming fishing villages and lively resorts of the Cote Vermeille to the snowcapped peaks and mountain trails of the Pyrenees. Lovely Perpignan is the HUB for exploring a great variety of cultural and holiday experiences. TO THE NORTH are the marvellous waterscapes of the lake/lagoons and seafood centres on the way to Leucate (15kms) including Windsurfing and Adventure centres, Waterpark and Sailing. Further on, the African wildlife park of Sigean warrants a great day trip ( by car). TO THE SOUTH - past the fine Golfcourse at St Cyprien - is the spectacular cliff route above the beautiful fishing villages (and artists' venus) of Collioure, Port Vendres and Banjuls with their special joys and wine appellations. TO THE SOUTHWEST along the lovely valley of the TET river there are hill-clinging ancient villages and abbeys, PRADES (centre of music festivals) and especially the UNESCO World Heritage walled city of Villefranche with its fine dining and it's stalagmite caves. From here you can take the 'little yellow train' up into the Pyrenees on a spectacular open-air journey or bathe in the openair hot springs pools of Bains St Thomas, surrounded by mountain beauty. TO THE WEST ALONG THE AGLY RIVER is the rich historic trail of the CATHAR CASTLES perched atop the craggy outcrops of the Fenouilledes mountains above rolling vineyards and orchards of almond and apricot - a spectacular route - or the awesome Gorges de Galamus with its hermitage and great hiking trails. And everywhere along these roads are pretty picnic spots and the caves of vineyards for savouring the wonderful wines of the region.

While Summer has its special draws, you will find that the off-season has particular appeal , and economy! Swimming in the warm Med. can be done up to November - the month of the giant Perpignan Carnival, Autumn foliage is spectacular in the mountains where there are year-round SPAS and Thermal centres, THE SKI-SLOPES of the PYRENEES are just an hour away throughout the winter. The CHRISTMAS markets, skating rinks and funfairs of Perpignan with lantern boat trips and spectacles last well into January - There is always a festival or three taking place at any time throughout the year. September sees the famous PHOTO-JOURNALISM festival of Perpignan with fascinating expositions around the city. The blooming orchards of the region and their festivals grace the early Spring. EASTER in this sunny CATALAN city has its colourful processions and ceremonies. MAY brings its plethora of wild-flowers and its Book and Music festivals across the region . The famous CHERRY FESTIVAL of CERET is at the end of May and June sees the beach- restaurants opening for swimmers and sunbathers. SUMMER SOLSTICE is especially celebrated in the city with Son et Lumiere displays, Concerts and Fireworks while the hardiest citizens climb the sacred Catalan mountain CANIGOU which presides majestically over this city and region,

The apartment is ideally located in a secure, gated complex in wooded grounds with 3 entrances: one exit gate gives onto the main road to the beaches (or to the mountains) the second exit is towards the city-centre, shops and parks and the third leads to the river Tet with its lovely treelined river-bank walks and Palais des Expositions.. A Carrefour supermarket is just around the corner (2 mins) as are a Pharmacy, Wine cave, Delicatessen, Sushi takeway, Bank ATM and Bakery. A five minute stroll brings you to the Central Park with its great children's playground. Seven mins walk brings you along 'Les Platanes' with its majestic trees and fountains to the beautiful city centre, its shops and restaurants, Tourist Office and museums. Perpignan is beautiful and laid back, friendly and compact and the old walled city especially fascinating with its little streets of boutiques, speciality shops and openair cafes, A bus stop, just outside the gate. will bring you to ST Marie Beach (our favourite) in 20 mins. (or you can take the pretty cycle path for 12 kms. There is an extensive regional bus network. Winter is short and mild in Perpignan the sunniest city in France, despite its magnificent snowcapped backdrop of the Pyrennees, visible from the city, with its magical winter markets and carnivals.

The apartment is spacious and airy with Entrance hall, Separate fully-equipped Kitchen with sunny west-facing balcony and small court for drying clothes. The Bathroom has both shower and tub with separate W.C, each with window. The Salon has large sliding glass doors giving onto a sunny east balcony with patio-table, chairs and sunlounger, overlooking wooded grounds with constant birdsong and little red squirrels to entertain. Both double bedrooms are roomy with big wardrobes, dressing tables and french doors onto small balconies. The third bedroom has wardrobe, desk and a double pull-out sofabed - can be used as a sitting room or study also. Electric fans in all rooms. CentraL heating with radiators in all rooms For your convenience, there is a good library of English-language BOOKS, CDs and DVDs and plenty of tourist literature, maps, bus schedules and recommended itineraries. An ample supply of towels and bedlinen is provided free of charge but laundry charges (very reasonable) do apply if laundry/cleanng is left to do on departure.
