The house lies above the village of Pigge (midway between Trevi and Spoleto) and offers stunning views across the valley to Montefalco beyond. Secluded nooks and shady corners abound and below the large terrace, from where sunsets can be watched over a glass of red wine, the new swimming pool (12 by 4 meters) waits among the olive trees, romantically approached by a curving flight of stone steps. All the rooms in the main part of the house and the guest room are light and spacious and have been tastefully furnished and decorated. Beyond the house there are paths and tracks leading in every direction and the surrounding woods and groves are full of wildlife. Excellent restaurants serving local food and wine (guests receive the latest recommendations in our information pack), supermarkets and small shops all lie within 15 minutes drive in the still unspoiled towns of Trevi and Spoleto (which Shelley called the 'most romantic town in Italy').
The Umbria Region
Umbria is the 'green heart of Italy' with no sea coast and is cheaper and more off the beaten track than Tuscany. From May onwards it is sunny and warm with dry, hot summers. June and September are particularly good months to visit. The countryside is hilly and full of medieval towns that are rich in art and history. Spoleto, Orvieto, Gubbio, Trevi, Spello, Montefalco and the main city, Perugia, are perched on top of hills and contain narrow, winding streets, beautiful piazzas and world-famous churches and museums.
Spoleto, Orvieto, Gubbio, Trevi, Spello, Montefalco and the main city, Perugia, are delightful destinations for day or half-day trips. Lake Trasimeno is less than an hour's drive away and the shoreline towns have excellent fish restaurants or you can explore the Etruscan remains scattered through the area. A ferry also takes people to the island in the middle of the lake. It is possible to hire bikes locally and the opportunities for walking or serious hiking up into the wildernesses of the Sibillini national park, or nearer, are limitless. The coast (either Tuscany or Marche) can be reached in just under two hours. It is possible to visit Rome or Florence by train from either Trevi or Spoleto. Wine tasting and eating out in the local restaurants are activities that all of our guests have enjoyed.
Fly to Perugia (45 minutes from house) with Ryanair from Stansted. Or Rome, Pisa or Ancona with EasyJet, Ryanair, or other airlines. Car hire available at all airports. The house is situated 2kms above the village of Pigge, which is about a 2 hour drive from these airports (3 hours from Pisa)
