The harbour town of Castletownbere with its bars and restaurants and Allihies, with its white sandy beach, are both 9 kms away. County Cork is the most southerly and the largest of the counties of Ireland. The western area of the county, known as West Cork, is a popular destination for tourists who visit the small villages and islands including nearby Dursey and Bere Island.

In recent years land in West Cork has become in high demand internationally, and large numbers of EU citizens have settled in the area, along with celebrities. West Cork is noted for its rugged natural beauty, fine beaches and distinct social atmosphere.

Castletownbere (9 km away) is Beara peninsula's main town and is also the largest white fish port in Ireland. There are supermarkets, coffee shops, pubs, restaurants, clothes and hardware shops in the town. There is mooring for yachts in the harbour and great sheltered sailing in the haven of Bere Island. Neil Jordan shot the movie 'Ondine', starring Colin Farrell, in Castletownbere and the Beara peninsula during 2008. An annual regatta is held here during the month of August.

The picturesque village of Eyeries (4 km away) has beautifully painted houses and flower displays on nearly every window. Parts of the TV series 'Falling for a Dancer' were shot here in 1997.
