Cabanas: An aquarelle made of sun and sea
The history of Cabanas goes back to 1734, when the tuna fishing started and originated the first cabins, indispensable to the fishing equipments storage and to the company's expansion. For more than 20 years, the cabins were referred as seasonal residences only, however, in approximately 1757/58, some fishermen opted to build their permanent homes there. Strongly connected to fishing activities, this settlement has an area of 3480 hectares and 1106 inhabitants (2001 Census), although this number grows considerably during the summer due to the village's elevated tourism development.
On the 21th June 1997, Cabanas was declared settlement, after being disconnected from Conceição and, on the 19th April 2004 it was elevated to village.
The settlement's center is its own township, and its patroness is Nossa Senhora do Mar - Our Lady of the Sea.
Nowadays, the settlement is still dedicated to fishing, contributing to the local gastronomy enrichment with products such as tuna, launce, mollusks and clams. Even though it is intimately connected with this activity, Cabanas also profits from tourism, being the most visited settlement along the year. The jump for the tourism increase and explosion came in 1973, year in which Cabanas saw its first hotel unit: Aldeamento Pedras da Rainha. This infrastructure construction besides bringing tourism for the land, it creates several job opportunities. From there the community's future became promissory, clearly betting on this force: tourism.
Today Cabanas offers to all its visitors a rich natural heritage due to its fauna and flora which allied to the diverse offer of lodging and restaurants presents all truly great moments and satisfaction. And that is why we invite you to visit one of the most sought after towns in the county.
