Alto Golf & Country Club is an exclusive and extremely popular resort with a large number of resident owners. We bought our apartment on the Country Club after falling in love with Alvor and with Alto and after going back there year after year. We are not the only ones to feel this way, as we often bump into old friends when we are there and quite a number of people have chosen the resort as their regular holiday spot and return there each year.
Located in Portugal’s Western Algarve, the Country Club is set in beautifully landscaped gardens, with villas, townhouses and apartments to rent, many with superb views of the sea or the fabulous gardens. It is an ideal location for family holidays, with indoor and outdoor pools, tennis courts and a gym and is less than five minutes walk from the beatiful fishing village of Alvor.
Set on a separate site just over a mile from the Country Club, the 18 hole, Par 72 golf course, was the last to be designed by the legendary Sir Henry Cotton. The winding fairways and elevated greens reflect Sir Henry’s golfing philosophy of providing low handicap players with a testing game and still affording plenty of enjoyment for players at average club level and providing satisfaction and inspiration for beginners.

The Algarve Region
The Algarve
Enclosed by ranges of hills to the North, the Algarve has a climate, culture and scenery very different from the rest of Portugal. Its stunning coastline and year round mild weather, maintained by warm sea and air currents from nearby North Africa, make it one of the most popular holiday destinations in southern Europe. Many visitors head for the blue sea, the fine golden sands framed by cliffs and rocks or the pretty fishing villages and manicured golf courses of the south coast.The most southwesterly tip of Europe, the Algarve is a haven of beautiful sandy beaches, sleepy traditional fishing villages, world class golf courses, untouched mountain towns, international marinas and year round sunshine.
For thousands of years it has been a much favoured area, with a colourful history. Once a kingdom in its own right, the Algarve has seen invasions by the Phoenicians, Romans and Moors, been the starting point for great explorations, and now is a wonderful place for you and your family to come and visit.
Alvor Area

Originally a fishing village , Alvor retains much of its charm , with narrow cobbled streets and narrow terraced houses running down to the quayside.
Fish restaurants line the quayside and the smell of the barbeques will lead you in the right direction. Many resturants are scattered throughout the Village from expensive cuisine to budget family meals. From Portuguese to the familiar Chinese and Indian.
There are also a number of very friendly bars where you can enjoy a cocktail while you are entertained or even try your hand at karaoke.
Portimao
Only 5km from Alvor, Portimao principal draw is its wide esplanade alongside the river which is made for an effortless stroll. Head up river towards the bridge to discover a number of sardine resturants lining theharbour wall. To discover more walk under the road from this point into the old part of town where you wil find a central barbeque area surrounded by yet more resturants.
Wide pedestrian streets in the main area of town are filled with high quality shopping opportunities. Narrow streets either side of the main shopping area reveal numerous small resturants which serve small economical and tasty lunches.

If you want to eat...
The village of Alvor is only just outside the back gate of the Country Club. However if you do not fancy going out, the Club has an excellent restaurant called Cottons where you will be well looked after by a loyal team of waiters who know most of the residents by name. The poolside bar serves a lunch time menu served on the terrace overlooking the pool. During the summer there is a weekly program of BBQ,s and special themed event evenings where a variety of meals are served outside.
Fancy barbequed fish ? The Village of Alvor is the place to be. Walk down towards the harbour and you will be greeted by the hustle and bustle of lively restaurants with enormous charcoal barbeques.
Or if you want to eat good food, you will find an excellent choice of Portuguese, Chinese, Indian, Italian and international restaurants, with excellent cuisine at unbelievably affordable prices.
And for some light entertainment there are numerous bars, some quiet where you can join the locals, some with resident musicians and in the main street are one or two karaoke bars.
Cooking in ?
Every day (except Sunday) there is a lively market in the old centre of Alvor with fresh vegetables and fish.
Shopping
For low cost shopping and a bargain if you can haggle, visit a Gypsy Market on the second Tuesday of every month just outside the village of Alvor and every first Monday of every month in Portimao.
If you fancy a walk, it's easy walking just wandering around the old village streets or further afield just up the river estuary for an interesting ramble. A great walk is along the beach and up past the rocky cliffs and towards Praia de Rocha. Take a bus or taxi back if the sun gets too much to tackle the return journey.
Golf, Tennis, Swimming, Fitness Centre, table tennis, snooker, pool, a driving range , putting green, shuffle board, a beauty centre and organized aerobics are all available on site.
Golf
The championship 18 hole golf course designed by Sir Henry Cotton is a par 72 layout measuring 6125 metres and is spread over two undulating valleys. It is testing for low handicap players and provides an enjoyable game for the average club player.
Reduced green fees are available to residents and their guests. Tee times can be booked in advance. Club tournaments are played Tuesdays and Friday mornings where visitors are welcome to join for a small fee.
Swimming
A large outdoor pool and a heated indoor pool is situated at the Country Club and some of the Golf apartments have their own communal pool.
Tennis
Two floodlight courts are available at the Country Club and one at the Golf Club. Social tennis can be arranged at a local hotel or at the local tennis club.
Fitness & Leisure Centre
The facilities are well equipped with a full range of muscle wrenching machines. For more leisured exercise there is table tennis and shuffleboard.
Getting There
There are lots of direct flights to Faro with Aer Lingus, Ryanair or TAP.
Faro Airport is a 50 minute drive. The Club can arrange for a taxi to collect you from the airport as a car is not absolutely necessary if you stay at the Country Club.

Alto Golf & Country Club is immaculately maintained with an abundance of trees and flowering shrubs making it a very green and pleasant place to stay. It has landscaped subtropical gardens, pools and waterfalls.
The country club has a combination of luxury villas and apartments, set around stunningly landscaped gardens.
You can relax around the outdoor pool, with a cocktail from The Rum Shack, a Caribbean Rum Shack themed poolside bar, work out in the gymnasium, have a quiet game of tennis, swim lengths in the indoor pool or simply wander around the beautiful gardens.
There is a variety of swimming facilities at Alto. The main pool at the country club is a great place to sit with others, taking advantage of a poolside drinks service from The Rum Shack. Alternatively take the plunge in the heated indoor pool in the winter months, and relax afterwards in the Jacuzzi and sauna.
There are three flood lit tennis courts, with racket and ball hire available free of charge to residents. Just book your court with reception and pretend you’re on Wimbledon’s centre court on final day.
There is a health and beauty salon at Alto, where you can get everything from a haircut to a massage.
Set in the original farmhouse building, naturally cool during the hot summer months, there is a gymnasium where you can work off the excesses of your evenings out.
Rental Details
Access to free sunloungers and umbrellas on the beach, beside Restinga restaurant. Please note however they there is a limited number available on a first come first served basis and their availability is not guaranteed, particularly at high season.
Arrival/departure dates are flexible. Arrival time is 2 p.m. and departure time is 10 a.m. However, earlier arrival and/or later departure will be accommodated if you give advance notice and if is there is nobody leaving/arriving on your date of arrival/departure.

Guest Book
Just to let you know that we have had a brilliant time here. The apartment is lovely, great situation both on the complex and in Alvor. It is very well equipped for a holiday home and such a lovely setting, beautiful flowering trees and shrubs all around. It is probably the nearest apartment to the pool, yet is secluded and you can't hear any noise from the pool.

We are just back from our most enjoyable holiday in the Alto Club. The apartment was very clean and spacious, the complex was perfect for our needs and the facilities were great. Alvor was very family orientated and the restaurants were excellent especially those by the harbour. Hopefully we will be back next year.
