The Offaly Region
County Offaly (Contae Uíbh Fhailí in Irish) is a county in Leinster, Ireland, bordered by seven other counties: Galway, Roscommon, Westmeath, Meath, Kildare, Laois, and Tipperary. Originally the Kingdom of Uí Failghe, it was shired in 1556 by Mary I of England during one of the Plantations of Ireland, it was originally named King's County, after King Philip II of Spain and the county town was Daingean until the nineteenth century.
The southern part of the county is occupied by the Slieve Bloom Mountains, the northwestern part is the floodplain of the River Shannon and the remainder consists of large bogs including the Bog of Allen and Boora Bog.
Birr in the south of the county is best known for its castle and gardens. Birr Castle is owned by the Parsons family, (the family bears the title: 'Earl of Rosse') and is best known for its 19th century telescope. Before the plantation of modern day Offaly by English settlers, the territories it comprises were controlled principally by the Ó Conchubhair Fáilghe clan in the North/East of the county and the Ó Céarbhaill of Ely in the south.

Srah Castle, Srah, Tullamore
Srah was built in 1588 by John Briscoe, an officer in Queen Elizabeth's army. During the late sixteenth century, Laois and Offaly were planted with families from Britain known as the Elizabethan planters. These families constructed fortified residences on their newly acquired lands in the architectural fashion of that period. Where Gaelic lords maintained their lands they constructed similar tower houses that reflected their power and status.
Charleville Castle, Charleville Forest, Tullamore
Late 18th century Gothic masterpiece, designed by Francis Johnston. "While in Tullamore, the tourist should not forego the advantage of paying a visit to the magnificent castle and demesne of the Earl of Charleville, called Charleville Forest, a privilege which is conceded to respectable strangers. The demesne is of considerable extent, comprising an area of 1,500 acres, and possessing natural beauties of the highest order. The Clodiagh river winds in a curving sweep through the beautiful grounds...." taken from 'Sights and Scenes in our Fatherland' published by Thomas Lacy in London in 1863.
